Abstract
During research on early 17th century Flemish panel paintings the personal marks of different panel makers were found. The practice began in Antwerp 1617 through the panel makers' guild and so the Antwerp city mark (2 hands/3 towers) is often found as well. Several personal marks have been found, with the aid of a UV lamp, on the backs of panel paintings in the Winter Room, Rosenberg Castle, Copenhagen, as well as in some art galleries and collection in France. The habit of marking with red chalk seems to have been a normal practice at the same time as marking with matrices stamped into the wood was applied. As apparently the subject has not been widely studied in northern European countries, the author would welcome any additional information.
