Abstract

This article presents the discovery of two
previously unknown manuscripts in the Danish
National Archives in Copenhagen. The
manuscripts are made by the Norwegian missionary
Hans Egede (1686-1758) and dated to
1729. They contain four poems, two in Greenlandic
and two in Danish. According to the title
sheets, the Greenlandic texts were composed
by the Greenlanders Christian Frederik and
Peder Vilding, while Egede translated and recomposed
them in Danish. In this article we
assess the manuscripts’ provenance, compile
biographical information about the two supposed
authors, and supply transcriptions of the
manuscripts. Finally, we seek to put forward
some tentative explanations of the creation
of the Greenlandic and Danish texts as well as
their mutual relation.
