Immigrants at Holmegaard Glasswork: The changing role of immigrant labor at Holmegaard glasswork

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperResearch

Abstract

Immigrants have always played a role in the production of glass in Denmark, with the first glassworkers in Denmark coming from Norway to Holmegaard Glasswork in 1825.
This subject has been touched upon by most of the writers who have worked with the history of the Danish glass industry,1 but never thoroughly researched. Therefore, the knowledge about immigrants’ role in the Danish glass industry is limited.
In this paper, I will show how immigrant workers at Holmegaard Glasswork in the 19th century went from playing an essential role as the main workforce with a monopoly of knowledge about glass production to a small group of workers, that were hired when there were no Danes left to take the positions.
