Abstract

This chapter discusses the scored piece Opus 51, written by the Danish intermedia
artist Eric Andersen (b. 1943) in 1964. In particular, we address the central element
of trust involved in performing the piece and how this leads the work to adapt to
and, indeed, be shaped by the institutional codes that frame its performance. We do
this by discussing elements of the research and exhibition project Eric Andersen
Exhibition Lab, held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark, in
2018, in light of the colorful circumstances surrounding the first performance and
the subsequent reception of Opus 51 in 1964–65.1
