Abstract
Alternative Female Roles in the History Paintingsof Kristian ZahrtmannDuring his lifetime, Kristian Zahrtmann (1843-1917) painted many works portraying women from theworld of history and literature. What happens when the image is turned “upside down” with a queerinterpretation of masculinity and performance?SummaryA corpulent elderly Aspasia, an arse-warming, pipe-smoking Queen Christina, and a naked Susannastanding on her hands: Kristian Zahrtmann’s (1843-1917) history paintings of women are unlikemost from the minds and hands of his contemporaries. Zahrtmann often depicts women inunconventional and ambiguous ways, contravening the beauty ideals and art-historical traditions ofhis time. This article offers a queer look at Zahrtmann’s historical images of women, examining theircomplexity, paradoxes and potential for criticising norms
