Marks and Brands on Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Dutch and Flemish Panel Paintings. History, Meaning & Digitization

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

While in residence at the Getty, I wish to ready a vast analogue archive of marks on 16th and 17th century panel paintings or paintings on copper for inclusion in the RKD Marks on Art Database; this infrastructure allows the artwork with the mark to be linked to the artists and panel- and copper support makers, as well as the technical documentation available on the support (RKDtechnical/Dendro4Art); secondly I shall re-evaluate the marks and their implication for the dating of paintings to be published in RKDstudies; in this publication, I will refine and update my 1998 conclusions including Dutch panel marks and marks on copper supports. The RKDStudies platform will present the text in cross-reference with the database records of the marks, allowing the analysis to develop and evolve fluidly with marks that will surface in the future.
