Italian Paintings - Three Centuries of Collecting

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Between October 2019 and February 2020, a team of researchers from CATS-SMK, commissioned by the National Gallery of Sweden (Nationalmuseum), studied six paintings and one drawing belonging to the Italian collection.

The request for CATS was to investigate the materials and techniques in the selected artworks by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and fibre optics reflectance (FORS) spectroscopies.

In order to obtain a better understanding of the structure of layers below the surface of four paintings, samples were collected, embedded in resin to prepare cross-sections, and investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDXS) and, in specific cases, Raman spectroscopy.
