Personal profile

Research areas

My research combines a focus on Inner Asia, mainly Mongolia, with a general interest in anthropological theory. I have always been interested in a variety of subjects – exchange/sociality, economic anthropology, postsocialism, magic/witchcraft, gossip, paranoia and political culture – but my research has almost always, in one way or the other, been concerned with understanding processes of (radical postsocialist) transition and cultural understandings of social relations. Besides my long-term interest in Mongolia, I have also previously carried out research on issues related to the Uyghurs and Western China.

I was previously Deputy Head of Department (research) at the Department for Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies (University of Copenhagen), Head of Center for Comparative Culture Studies (University of Copenhagen) and PI of a research project on “Escalations: A Comparative Ethnographic Study of Accelerating Change” (funded by the Danish Research Council for the Humanities).
