Museum of Southwest Jutland has its head quarter in Ribe and covers the municipalities of Esbjerg and Fanø at the northern Wadden Sea area. The museum has a strong archeological tradition, especially concerning Viking Age Ribe. The museum has a formalized collaboration with Suzhou Museum, China, and close relations to the Museum of the City of New York (concerning social reformator and photo documentarist Jacob A. Riis).
Research profile
Museum of Southwest Jutland has a strong research tradition and publishes the recognized archeological journal By, marsk og geest and the peer-reviewed yearbook Levende viden. The research strategy contains the following themes:
• Settlement development from late Stone Age till the end of Bronze Age (2800-500 BC)
• Iron Age in West Jutland – settlements, burials and society
• Culture, Business and Tourism in the Wadden Sea Region
• Centre and Town in Southwest Jutland in a Northern European perspective
