Description
Since its first discovery in the 1980’s and its subsequent attribution to Johannes Vermeer, the Italianate painting of Saint Praxedis has led a troublesome life. Arguments for, and mainly against, accepting the painting as by the Delft master have been many and diverse. Technical research, some of a very recent nature, suggests that the materials employed in the painting are fully compatible with what one would expect in a Dutch 17th century painting. As one of the sceptics of the attribution of the painting to Vermeer, I in this talk shall discuss these results viewed against the two other versions of the painting as well as a drawing. While sharing my inquisitory commentary on the three saints, I shall address my previous reservations and pose questions that still needs to be addressed more thoroughly.
