Description
When the outline of the Cultural history of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries was planned twenty years ago, we decided for both a cross-disciplinary and transnational definition of the topic. This was not be just another art history or literary history. On the contrary the target was to explore avant-garde manifestations across media including literature, painting, photography, architecture, design, film, performing arts, music, theatre, dance, and much more. At the same time, the national perspective was firmly rejected. While this had been prevailing in most accounts of Nordic literary and art history until then, the intention here was to map out exchanges and networks across the Nordic region and beyond. In addition the study was to comprise social and cultural contexts, turning this into a cultural history of the avant-gardes. Despite the intention to expand definitions and approach the avant-garde as a diverse field of study, certain aspects were completely overlooked. In my contribution to this panel, I will discuss how the growing focus on colonial histories in recent years has prompted me to reconsider our definitions. What is the significance of this omission?
