Marie and Peder Severin Krøyer – A Sense of Beauty

Activity: Talk or presentationLecture and oral contribution

Description

For many years Peder Severin Krøyer’s paintings of his beautiful wife, Marie Krøyer, have been known to the public whereas her work as an artist until the beginning of the millennium were more or less unknown. Marie and Peder Severin Krøyer married in 1889 and she largely stopped painting at the beginning of the 1890s, but continued to design furniture and textiles, as well as decorating several homes. We also know that she helped many of the artists in Skagen to decorate their homes or contributed with various interior design ideas. The story of Marie and Peder Severin Krøyer is also the story of two artists who, in their respective ways, had to fight for their artistic standpoints, where only one of them attained success and recognition in their own lifetimes. However, recent research has shown that as an artist couple they collaborated on many things inspired by the British Arts and Crafts movement. Furthermore, the discovery of Marie Krøyer’s paintings and sketches tells the story of a talented artist that never got her artistic breakthrough. This lecture will take a closer look at the art and design of Marie and Peder Severin Krøyer with a focus on the inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement.
