From tree to painting: dating panels with the help of dendrochronology. When a painting is painted on a wooden panel it is possible to establish a terminus post quem for its creation using dendrochronology, a research method based on measuring the tree rings of (the planks of) a panel. In recent years, the RKD – thanks to the generous support of a donor – has been entering the research data amassed by the dendrochronologist Peter Klein into a database. Klein has identified the wood type and measured the tree rings of thousands of painted panels across the world. The data, which has been handed over to the RKD, forms an invaluable resource for art-historical research. Peter Klein will explain the methodology of dendrochronological research and discuss some interesting results. The data will shortly be available for consultation through the RKD website and this will allow researchers to ask new questions. In a second talk, Jørgen Wadum will look at the possibilities of combining dendrochronological data with other research results to reveal new information about the making of painted panels.
