Codex Purpureus Rossanensis: the MOLAB Approach

Activity: Talk or presentation › Lecture and oral contribution

Description

The Royal Library (Kungliga biblioteket) in Stockholm together with Swedish National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) organized an expert seminar on purple manuscripts.
The main topic was to discuss how and with which non-destructive (or micro-destructive) methods can the organic colourant of the Medieval Bible Codex Aureus be identified. The question arose from a loan request with subsequent debate on the light-fastness of the coloured parchment. Can it be purple from snail or is it other organic colorant from plant or insect?
