Abstract
Looking at the Nordic cities, the chapter suggests the notion of urban metabolism as a way of approaching the peripheral perspective of the book. Using environment and especially water as an analytical lens, the chapter highlights cases from recent research, where metabolism influences politics, going from water closets in Copenhagen over ditches in Sweden to hydropower plants in northern Norway. Concluding, the chapter suggests ways to develop the concept toward an urban environmental history.
