Abstrakt

This paper presents an unknown painting depicting a robbery–scene, signed and dated 1609 by Jan Brueghel I (1568–1625) and Sebastiaen Vrancx (1573–1647). The painting was discovered in an undocumented private collection in Denmark. It is nearly identical with a work in the Staatsgalerie Aschaffenburg, of which the landscape was painted by Brueghel and the figures by Vrancx, the latter adding his monogram. How do these two versions relate to each other? And how did the repetition of motives impacted the collaboration between the artists?
