In this themed issue, we explore the dialectical relationship between the spatiality of 20th century European cities and a particular emotion – fear: from a physically palpable fear of bomb attacks, to the fear of traffic accidents instrumentalised in urban planning discussions, to more diffuse fears such as those associated with railway stations or post-war urban fear projections. By addressing different aspects, roots and shades of the tension between fear and urban space, we aim to offer new perspectives and insights into the emotional history of 20th century urban Europe.
