Abstract
The site of Pinnberg is located northeast of Hamburg, Germany in the Ahrensburg Tunnel Valley which is
widely known for Late Palaeolithic sites like Ahrensburg-Stellmoor and Meiendorf. The site was extensively
excavated by Alfred Rust and shows an occupation sequence ranging from the Late Palaeolithic to the Bronze
Age. In his publication Die Funde vom Pinnberg, Rust (1958a) differentiates up to nine different cultural units
that date to different chronological zones. Since this chronological zonation was already questioned shortly
after the book was published, a technological analysis of the lithic material is here used to evaluate A. Rust’s
chronological differentiation. By doing this we are able to decide whether the chronological units detected
by A. Rust are reliable or if the site of Pinnberg has to be seen as a palimpsest.
