    Abstract

The short life of the magazine mak was heavily influenced by the growing political orientation of the aesthetic field. The editorial board, consisting of prominent authors and critics from the younger generation, were influenced by the schism between literary experiments and the call for a more direct political involvement. In some aspects the avant-garde poetics of the magazine ta’ (1967–1968) were continued, but in mak there was also a rediscovery of the avant-gardes of the 1910s and 1920s, and of dadaism and surrealism, as well as left-wing politics and Eastern philosophy and religions, such as Buddhism.
