Abstract

What does it mean for a museum to work in the hybrid space between physical and digital? This practice-based exploration takes us through fifteen years of digital transformation at Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK) in Copenhagen. Founded on the vision of being a national gallery for all, it has explored digital technologies playfully to expand reach and inclusion of diverse audiences. This has allowed SMK to foster strong relationships with diverse users and communities, finding fertile ground in the hybrid spaces between open data and analogue engagement. From early days of optimism and failing forward, the museum has reached a phase where a deeper sense of reflection on potential outcomes are leading decision making, informed by current developments in digital technologies – not least artificial intelligence.
