Abstract

Spiced with technical observations, scientific analysis and accounts of past treatment actions, the story of the ‘Rembrandts’ at Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK), Copenhagen, and their fate are described and placed within a historical
context. In 1931 the gallery claimed to have ten genuine Rembrandts in its possession. Over time this figure changed dramatically, and in 1987 the holdings of the Danish National Gallery were believed to contain not a
single authentic Rembrandt painting. In this paper, a survey of past treatments and recent examinations unravel an intricate story about the gallery’s handling
and appraisal of artworks, the approaches and methods used by its various caretakers, and of how, after all, in 2005 two paintings were rediscovered to be
the work of Rembrandt.
