Abstract

In 2021 work package 3.4 Dynamic Glocal Networks focused on the excavation of the sites at Nipisat, Arajutsisat and Aasivissuit. In addition to the activities of W.P 3.4, the interdisciplinary engagement in Aasivissuit – Nipisat involved collaborative efforts from W.P. 2.1 Hidden in the Midden, 2.2 Loss of Cultural Heritage, 3.5 History and 3.6 Marine Archaeology. Altogether more than 20 persons camped on Nipisat and 4 to 5 on Arajutsisut during field work in August. In addition to AAH work-packages, the basecamp also hosted a team conducting cultural heritage and environmental vulnerability assessment headed by Hans Harmsen from Greenland National Museum & Archives. A base camp dining tent with a solid floor was constructed at Nipisat to minimize wear on vegetation and provide a resting and dining space for participants. Mobilization and logistics began on July 22nd and proceeded to end of the month, with assistance provided by local operator Sirius from Sisimiut. In early August, excavations were initiated at Nipisat East (NKAH 5526), Nipisat West (NKAH 5534), and in front of house 7 and 9 on the site of Arajutsisat (NKAH 285). On August 25th, the camp was dismantled, and six participants from W.P. 3.4, 2.1 and 2.2 traveled inland to Aasivissuit (NKAH 2845) where monitoring equipment was installed in the midden excavation from 1978 (Grønnow et. al. 1983). In addition to these focused excavations, surveys were carried out at Præsteø in collaboration with WP 3.5. to document possible remains of a so-called fortress marked on ‘Duckes map’ from 1730. An additional submarine survey was carried out by David Gregory (W.P. 3.6) with assistance from Allan Lynge from Greenland National Museum & Archives piloting the Poca. The submarine surveys were performed by means of submersible drone in (1) Iterlassuatsiaq (a few hundred meters to the southeast of Qeqertaq [Tørveøen] in Ikertooq fjord, south of Sarfannguit), (2) the Nipisat sound, and (3) in the cove to the southwest of Arajutsisut.
