Abstract

This article examines, for the first time, the exclusion of Danish playwright and critic, Svend Borberg from the Danish Playwrights Association. A progressive playwright and critic, Borberg was excluded following his controversial cultural collaboration with the German occupational forces during World War 2. Through the Association’s meticulous minutes, we examine how the Board and members, counting the foremost Danish playwrights, navigated in a grey area, weighing moral guilt and the principles for judgement, while Borberg was first found guilty, then acquitted, in court. And through the legal documents and personal archives of letters, statements, and interrogations, we add vital new information that the playwrights lacked, to this complicated and ambiguous case. This material offers new evidence of how Borberg, a pronounced apolitical humanist and pacifist, acted in close cooperation with the Danish government of collaboration, how he used and perceived his influence, and on the playwrights’ implication in the case.
