Abstract
The kingdom of the Danes between Borre and centralplaces
New research questions the role of the Borre mounts in a national narrative.
Instead, the burial site should be viewed as a political arena where local chiefs and
petty kings, with ties to the Danish as well as the Norwegian kingdom, fought
for power and control. Thereby, the Danish kingdom obtains a significant place
in the narrative. However, the notion of the Danish kingdom is ambiguous and
somewhat muddled. So-called centralplaces take an essential position; yet, their
economic resources, their functions and internal as well as external relations are
poorly understood and correspond inadequately
