This course addresses students across the Humanitiesin all language areas since its theoretical and methodological framework can be transferred to other cases of migrant literature. The course will introduce theories of memory studies, starting with the idea of cultural memory as a foundation of national identity and moving to contemporary ideas of transnational memories that travel and circulate beyond mental and geographical borders. Based on the case of Yugoslav literature of migration, the course will introduce different methods for analyzing traveling memories and tracing their impact on different national and public memory constructions. Memories travel by many means. This course will focus on human carriers of memory and how they import “alien” memories of the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s to Western Europe via the medium of literature.
