Keynote:Open Access is just the first step
How to build relevance and democratic engagement with open cultural heritage
The OpenGLAM movement (an acronym for Open Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) has swept over the globe for the past decade, and today more than 1,400 cultural heritage institutions worldwide are sharing their digitised collections on open terms. But openness is just the first step in a transformation of our sector from gatekeepers to facilitators of reuse by a diverse public. Through active facilitation of the needs and wishes of very diverse user groups – educators, researchers, creatives, artists, citizen scientists, lifelong learners, socially disadvantaged people – cultural heritage institutions have a unique opportunity to increase their public relevance, and to support a more inclusive and thriving civil society where more citizens feel welcomed and heard, and where democracy is something we build together though everyday engagement with our cultural and societal past, and our wishes for the future.
